Children's Speech and Language Therapy

What do we do?

Our Locala Speech and Language Therapists (SLTs) work with children aged 0-18 years who have communication and/or feeding and swallowing difficulties. These children may experience difficulties in the following areas:

  • Being able to listen and pay attention
  • Understanding words and instructions
  • Talking in words and sentences
  • Difficulties with pronunciation of speech sounds
  • Social communication and interaction
  • Stammering
  • Eating, drinking & swallowing

Our SLT team provides assessment and advice within each of these areas.

There are many reasons why children may have such difficulties and they can be as a result of language disorders, speech sound difficulties, learning disabilities, developmental or biomedical conditions, stammering, Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), hearing impairment and physical difficulties.

Please note: Between 1st June and 1st July 2024 no new referrals will be accepted by the service for communication needs. This is to allow time to introduce a new referral process, aimed at increasing the quality of referrals and providing a more supportive wait for children/young people and their families.

It will still be possible to make eating, drinking and swallowing referrals throughout this period via this link locala.org.uk/ereferrals/childrens-speech-and-language-feeding-north-only
